My advice for the rhetorical analysis essay would be to make sure you are not defining the three rhetorical appeals in the essay, but writing about how they are used in the webpage." -Rachel H. (Advice provided by a previous ENG-105 student)
The one essay out of the three that I favor over the other two is the rhetorical analysis. I feel that ethos, pathos, and logos, are overlooked in society. I am aware more now of these techniques that are used most everywhere within our view daily. Good luck future classmates! Keep going forward! You have this! It is impossible to fall when God has you in his hands." -Diane H. (Advice provided by a previous ENG-105 student)
All essays for ENG-105 need to use the APA 7th, Ed. style template w/out the abstract.

Click the button below
Step 1 Choose Your Topic for the Essay
Topic Choices: Choose ONE webpage to evaluate for your essay
CDC's, “About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” webpage OR the FBI’s, “Cyber Crime” webpage
Step 2 Rhetoric (ethos, pathos, and logos)/Examine the Webpage
Review the following slides to learn more about ethos, pathos, and logos; and how to examine and analyze your webpage.
Step 3 Introduction Paragraph: Hook, Summary, and Thesis
1. HookInclude a hook at the beginning of your introduction paragraph.
The hook should come from the CDC's, "About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)" webpage or the FBI's, "Cyber Crime webpage (depending upon what you chose for your topic." Please choose a quote from your webpage.
2. Summarize the WebpageFollowing the hook, you need to introduce your webpage...for example:
|
3. ThesisDo you think each appeal is used effectively or not? That is what you will assess when you create our thesis statement.
Your thesis should identify whether the CDC/FBI webpage uses ethos, pathos, and logos effectively on the webpage, along with identifying an audience. It should be the last sentence of your introduction paragraph, make an assessment concerning the effectiveness, and mention "ethos, pathos, and logos."
See the example thesis statement below and review additional examples in the slides:

Step 4 Required Sources and Collecting Evidence
All sources listed at the bottom of the CDC's web pages about ADHD should ❌not be used as a reference listing, nor should it be cited within your essay.
Since you are not accessing the journals they used, you will cite the web pages on your references page and for the in-text citations.
Since you are not accessing the journals they used, you will cite the web pages on your references page and for the in-text citations.
Two Webpages (❌No library sources)
ExampleIf a student were to choose the CDC's, “About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” webpage to evaluate, he or she might use it as your primary source and choose the Symptoms of ADHD and/or the Diagnosing ADHD webpage hosted on the CDC website about ADHD.

Collecting Evidence
- What evidence can you find to prove whether ethos, pathos, and logos were used effectively or not? You will want to know your purpose and/or audience for the essay. You should have placed that in your thesis statement.
- Examine the “About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” or "Cyber Crime" webpage and additional CDC or FBI webpages you chose from the CDC's or FBI's list of webpages on the “About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” webpage or the the FBI's webpages that might also cover Cyber Crime.
- Collect example research, evidence, statements, etc. from those webpages to support your thesis argument and to help prove your points.
Step 5 Topic Sentences, Paragraph Organization, and/or Evidence
Topic Sentences
Your topic sentences must coordinate and support the thesis argument. The body paragraphs must be organized in a logical manner that will not confuse readers. The topic sentences, for a rhetorical analysis essay, should mention the appeal discussed in the paragraph and whether the webpage effectively uses it. Please make sure you are using the exact appeal names and keywords that connect to your thesis statement. The topic sentence should:
- NOT be quotes or paraphrases or basic facts
- Reinforce the ideas presented in the thesis
- Present the appeal and how it is effectively used at the beginning of each body paragraph. See outline for more details.
Paragraph Organization and Evidence
- Further explanation as to the effectiveness of the rhetorical appeals may need additional support from the CDC/FBI's webpages, such as quotes and paraphrases from your main source (the “About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” webpage or the "Cyber Crime" webpage.
- All evidence must prove the effectiveness of ethos, pathos, and logos used on the “About Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” or “Cyber Crime” webpage. What are specific example statements from the site you can provide?
- Focus on balancing your statements and examples/quotes/paraphrases. This can be done using the quote sandwich method described in the videos below:

Step 6 APA Format, In-Text Citations, and References
- Please use the APA 7th Edition Template (without abstract) format template. Please note: there is a title page with a specific order and format of your heading, all pages (including page one) must have page numbers in the upper right corner (inserted as a header) (there is no running header statement needed), all margins must be 1.0 inch, paragraphs must be indented 0.5 inch, and the entire document must be double spaced in Times New Roman size 12 font. For our essays, we will not be dividing our paragraphs into sections, therefore, please do not add titles to any of your paragraphs in the essay. You can access the template at the Student Success Center website: https://www.gcumedia.com/lms-resources/student-success-center/v3.1/#/tools/writing-center/12/749/2498
- Review the slides and video below to help you with APA Style in-text citations and reference page for this essay.
