Objectives
The Review Essay is not about improvement or the effectiveness as in our previous essay. The focus is to select 3 criteria of the 5 (coverage, currency, objectivity, accuracy and/or authority) we studied in our lessons.
|
For example, what criteria make up an excellent engineering site or gaming site, diagnoses site, etc. How does it meet your selected criteria? Does it meet it or not?

Similar Types of Reviews
If I said a good adventure film should have action sequences, some comedic relief, and believable computer graphics. Then following that I select a movie to watch like the "Rogue One Star Wars" film to measure it against. I would then write a review based upon my perspective and judgment of that film against those 3 criteria. I would include examples and statements from the film to support that it met my criteria or not and indicate whether this film should be seen based upon my criteria.
|
If I were to buy a pair of shoes at Amazon, and I had 3 criteria that makes a great shoe, such as it does not constrict my foot, good cushioning for my arch, and a great style that goes well with my wardrobe. Then I purchase it, and I determine if those shoes meet my three criteria when I do a review of the product for the website. I either recommend the product or not based upon that criteria!
|
This is the same idea when you review a website from the list in Step 1 below. The Review Essay is just a formal academic review of a website against those 3 criteria from the 5 we studied during Topic 4.
The Five Criteria for Evaluating Websites

Step 1 Choose Your Website and Three Criteria
For this essay, I have been authorized to offer an alternate topic choice for this essay, so you have two topic focuses to choose from for this essay.
1. Choose ONE full Website to Evaluate
Do ❌NOT use the CDC/FBI/Mayo Clinic website for this essay.
CHOICE 1-ADHD Website
Choose ONE website from the list below. |
OR
CHOICE 2-Technology Website Choose ONE website from the list below: |
2. Choose Only Three Critieria from the Five We Studied This Week
The criteria choices are authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency, and/or coverage. Refer to Step 1 slides and info to understand the meanings of each criteria.
Step 2 Introduction Paragraph: Hook, Summary, and Thesis
1. Hook
Include a one-sentence hook at the beginning by choosing a surprising statistic 😮from one of the webpages from your whole website.
- Then begin the sentence with a signal phrase and/or your own words.
- Then include the quote and place quotation marks "..." around any exact wording in the quote from your source.
- Afterwards, include an APA in-text citation. See slides 11-16 for more on in-text citation formatting: https://pettyeng105.weebly.com/apa-style-resources.html
2. Summarize the Whole Website
Following the hook, you need to introduce and summarize what the whole website is about.
|
For example:
|
3. ThesisIt is the last sentence of the intro paragraph. For this essay, it is only one sentence in length. The objective is to recommend or not recommend your website in your thesis based upon your three criteria. Does the website meet all of your three criteria or not?

Step 3 Required Sources and Collecting Evidence
The source requirements should be at least two or more webpages from your chosen whole website to help you meet source requirements.
- For example, if I chose CHADD to evaluate, I would use two different webpages from the CHADD website as my required sources. I might choose the Treatment and Symptoms webpages as my sources from the CHADD website.
Collecting Evidence
- What evidence can you find to prove whether your website meets or did not meet your three criteria? You will want to know your purpose and/or audience for the essay. You should have placed that in your thesis statement.
- Examine the whole website and choose from the many webpages on your whole website to gather statements or indicators to prove your judgment of the website.
- Collect example research, evidence, statements, etc. from the variety of webpages on your website to support your thesis argument and to help prove your points.
Step 4 APA Format, In-Text Citations, and References
- Use the APA 7th Edition Template (without abstract) format template. Please note: there is a title page with a specific order and format of your heading, all pages (including page one) must have page numbers in the upper right corner (inserted as a header) (there is no running header statement needed), all margins must be 1.0 inch, paragraphs must be indented 0.5 inch, and the entire document must be double spaced in Times New Roman size 12 font.
- For our essays, we will not be dividing our paragraphs into sections, therefore, please do not add titles to any of your paragraphs in the essay.
- You can access the template at the Student Success Center website: https://www.gcumedia.com/lms-resources/student-success-center/v3.1/#/tools/writing-center/12/749/2498

Step 5 Organize Your Essay Using This Outline
To support your thesis argument and stance, be sure to consult and add evidence to your body paragraphs from at least two webpages from your website (that share the same URL). For more info, see Step 4 above.
1. Introduction Paragraph
2. Evaluate the piece of writing (THIS WILL BE YOUR THREE BODY PARAGRAPHS)
BODY PARAGRAPH 1:
- Hook or an attention getter is needed. You will need to add a signal phrase or intro phrase, quote from your website, quotation marks, and APA in-text citation.
- Introduce the website by formal name (not the URL) and summarize the site you selected in your own words. It should be about 3-4 sentences long.
- Thesis: The last sentence should include one sentence, which is a thesis statement at the end of the paragraph. It should state THREE specific criteria (using the key terms) you are using to evaluate this website AND how well the site meets these criteria or not. It should also include ONE audience choice for the webpage and ONE purpose for that audience at the end of the thesis. To get help with your thesis statement, go to "Review Essay Tips"

BODY PARAGRAPH 1:
