Understanding Rhetoric and the Three Rhetorical Appeals
Review the following videos and slides to gain a better understanding of the term "Rhetoric" and the meaning of the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos).
Step 1 Choose Your Topic for the Essay
Topic Choices: Choose ONE webpage to evaluate for your essay
CDC, “What is ADHD” webpage OR FBI’s, “Cyber Crime” webpage
Step 2 Rhetoric (ethos, pathos, and logos)/Examine the Webpage
Review the following slides to learn more about ethos, pathos, and logos; and how to examine and analyze your webpage.
Step 3 Introduction Paragraph: Hook, Summary, and Thesis
1. HookPlease include a hook at the beginning of your introduction paragraph.
The hook should come from the CDC's, "What is ADHD" webpage or the FBI's, "Cyber Crime webpage (depending upon what you chose for your topic." Please choose a quote from your webpage.
2. Summarize the WebpageFollowing the hook, you need to introduce your webpage...for example:
|
3. ThesisDo you think each appeal is used effectively or not? That is what you will assess when you create our thesis statement.
Your thesis should identify whether the CDC/FBI webpage uses ethos, pathos, and logos effectively on the webpage, along with identifying an audience. It should be the last sentence of your introduction paragraph, make an assessment concerning the effectiveness, and mention "ethos, pathos, and logos."
See the example thesis statement below and review additional examples in the slides:

Step 4 Required Sources and Collecting Evidence
Two Webpages (no library sources)

|
For example, if a student were to choose the CDC's, "What is ADHD" webpage to evaluate, he or she might use that webpage and choose the Treatment and/or Symptoms webpage hosted on the CDC website about ADHD.
Below is a list of possible second webpage choices you might use from the CDC.gov (URL) website

Collecting Evidence
- What evidence can you find to prove whether ethos, pathos, and logos were used effectively or not? You will want to know your purpose and/or audience for the essay. You should have placed that in your thesis statement.
- Examine the "What is ADHD" or "Cyber Crime" webpage and additional CDC or FBI webpages you chose from the CDC's or FBI's list of webpages on the "What is ADHD webpage" or the the FBI's webpages that might also cover Cyber Crime.
- Collect example research, evidence, statements, etc. from those webpages to support your thesis argument and to help prove your points.
Step 5 Topic Sentences, Paragraph Organization, and/or Evidence
Topic Sentences
Your topic sentences must coordinate and support the thesis argument. The body paragraphs must be organized in a logical manner that will not confuse readers. The topic sentences, for a rhetorical analysis essay, should mention the appeal discussed in the paragraph and whether the webpage effectively uses it. Please make sure you are using the exact appeal names and keywords that connect to your thesis statement. The topic sentence should:
- NOT be quotes or paraphrases or basic facts
- Reinforce the ideas presented in the thesis
- Present the appeal and how it is effectively used at the beginning of each body paragraph. See outline for more details.
Paragraph Organization and Evidence
- Further explanation as to the effectiveness of the rhetorical appeals may need additional support from the CDC/FBI's webpages, such as quotes and paraphrases from your main source (the "What is ADHD" webpage or the "Cyber Crime" webpage.
- All evidence must prove the effectiveness of ethos, pathos, and logos used on the “What is ADHD” or “Cyber Crime” webpage. What are specific example statements from the site you can provide?
- Focus on balancing your statements and examples/quotes/paraphrases. This can be done using the quote sandwich method described in the videos below:

Step 6 APA Format, In-Text Citations, and References
- Please use the APA 7th Edition Template (without abstract) format template. Please note: there is a title page with a specific order and format of your heading, all pages (including page one) must have page numbers in the upper right corner (inserted as a header) (there is no running header statement needed), all margins must be 1.0 inch, paragraphs must be indented 0.5 inch, and the entire document must be double spaced in Times New Roman size 12 font. For our essays, we will not be dividing our paragraphs into sections, therefore, please do not add titles to any of your paragraphs in the essay. You can access the template at the Student Success Center website: https://www.gcumedia.com/lms-resources/student-success-center/v3.1/#/tools/writing-center/12/749/2498

How are first draft essays graded?
- Points are awarded based upon completion for the first draft, which means a successful attempt of that type of essay according to resources and instructions, including word count and references page.
- If a first draft is submitted for an essay that does not try to meet the assignment requirements, you will receive point deductions or receive no credit on the assignment.
- Points will also be deducted for missing references page and low word count.
- Because the first draft is graded based upon completion, do not assume that this grade reflects or predicts the final grade.
- If there are few or no revisions done for the final draft, based upon instructor’s comments, points will be deducted or the final essay will be graded based upon the first draft submission.
- Late first draft essays cannot be accepted on the same day the final essay is due. If the assignment link is closed in LoudCloud for a first draft, you will see a final late due date. This is the last day a first draft can be accepted late.
